Jim Weaver Barnes, of Choctaw-Welsh ancestry, was born in Summerfield, Oklahoma, in 1933. After high school, he attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University (BA, 1964) and the University of Arkansas (MA, 1965, PhD, 1970). His teaching career consisted of posts as professor of Comparative Literature at Truman State University, 1970-2003, and professor of English at Brigham Young University, 2003-2006.
